Dr. Karim Mithani is a resident physician in neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, and is currently completing a Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering through the Surgeon-Scientist Training Program. He completed a combined Doctor of Medicine and Master of Engineering at the University of Toronto, with a research focus on developing minimally invasive, image-guided neurosurgical interventions for psychiatric diseases and movement disorders. His doctoral research involves studying deep brain stimulation of the nucleus accumbens as a potential treatment of severe, repetitive self-injurious behaviour in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. He is also actively investigating the neuronal circuitry of the nucleus accumbens and associated brain regions through intracranial electroencephalography.
Karim is keen to combine his clinical experience and surgical skills with engineering expertise to develop cutting-edge, personalized treatments for debilitating neurological and psychiatric diseases. His vision and work ethic is driven foremost by the experiences of individuals and families that he has cared for. In his free time, you can find Karim surfing, skiing, weight-lifting, or studying philosophy.
